Swedish Massage originated from Swedish physiologist, gymnastics instructor, and fencing master Per Henrik Ling

Swedish Massage, also known as Classical Massage, was popularized by Swedish physiologist, gymnastics instructor, and fencing master Per Henrik Ling.  He used massage and movement to promote increased range of motion, improved circulation, and decreased muscle tension.  Twelve years after his death there were 38 institutions in Europe teaching Ling’s system.

A Swedish Massage setting is on a massage table.  The client starts out lying between two sheets (blanket optional) with no clothing.  The therapist then enters (or is trained to professionally drape and assist the client onto the table in a classroom setting).  Oils and lotions are applied to each area.  For client’s safety, the only area un-draped is the one being worked on.   Aromatic essential oils, candles, relaxing music, and low lighting all help to a great Swedish Massage session.

Swedish Massage incorporates 5 different types of strokes.  Effleurage, a long gliding stroke, with the “grain” of the muscles, is great for stimulating venous blood flow to the heart.  Petrissage, a shorter stroke, goes vertical to the “grain” and is great for warming tissue for deeper work and restoring mobility by decreasing adhesions.  Friction strokes are small circular movements, superficial to moderately deep, and are a great assessment tool.  Vibration is a fine, tremulous movement.  It stimulates nerve activity and adds variety to the work.  Tapotement is a percussive motion, not a stroke, and can be used with fists, hands, or fingertips.  It also stimulates the nervous system and tones muscle.

Swedish Massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of uric acid and other metabolic wastes. It increases circulation without increasing heart load. It stretches the ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and pliable. It also stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves themselves at the same time. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is suggested in a regular program for stress management.  It can even stimulate internal organs when done over that area.  Swedish Massage, now available, is a great massage after a long weekend of skiing, hiking, camping, or anytime you want the benefits of holistic health!  Book one today!
